How do I confirm that I'm a national?

To confirm your status as a national, you should have mailed your Affidavit of Citizenship Evidence to the U.S. Department of State. While you may not receive a formal acknowledgment from them, your return certified mail receipt serves as confirmation that they received your documents. Additionally, you will receive a new passport book and card from the U.S. Department of State, which will further validate your status. Keep your certified mail receipt in a safe location as proof.

Optional Confirmation Method

If you want additional verification that they've received and filed your documents, you can submit an online FOIA/Privacy Act request directly on the U.S. Department of State website. Choose the Privacy Act selection as it includes the FOIA. See this link:

After you register on their site, you can submit the FOIA/Privacy Act request. Fill out the request form fields with your name, address, etc. Below is an example of the verbiage that you could enter into the Records Description field on the form. You should also enter your demographics into this field, even though you already did so previously on the form.

Please provide any and all records or submissions dealing with citizenship evidence. Specific to passport records; please provide any citizenship evidence and historical passport application documentation.

Date Range for Record Search: From MM/DD/YYYY To MM/DD/YYYY.

NamePlace of Birth: _____________Date of Birth: _________________Passport Number: _______________

It can take several weeks for them to reply, but you will eventually receive copies of your application and affidavit of citizenship evidence, showing it's in their system. It will not indicate your corrected status to national. You can track the progress of your request on their FOIA page.
